Conception: The Diocese of Thuckalay, since its erection, has been pondering over the thought of extending its educational outreach in the field of higher education. Mar George Alencherry set up a Diocesan Feasibility Study Team with priests, religious, and lay leaders under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Philip Kodiyanthara to explore ways to establish a higher education institution in Kanyakumari District to serve the poor and downtrodden, irrespective of caste, color, creed, or gender, while also providing ample opportunities to the youth of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church in the District.
Establishment: After the consecration of Mar George Rajendran, SDB as the second bishop of the Diocese of Thuckalay, the decision was made to establish the college. Named St Alphonsa College of Arts and Science, the institution was founded on June 30, 2014, with 148 students in four departments: Commerce, English, Physics, and Mathematics. Rev. Fr. Anthony Jose, the Parish Priest of Soosaipuram, was appointed as the first Secretary and Correspondent of the College, a role he continues to hold. The current building was inaugurated on January 17, 2016, with the support of the Diocese to offer quality education and infrastructure to the poor.
Present Status: Today, St Alphonsa College of Arts and Science is a vibrant community promoting academic curiosity and creativity. The college, affiliated with Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, provides higher educational opportunities and job-oriented training for the marginalized. Additional programs are offered after academic hours, including training for bank exams, government/private sector entry, National Service Scheme, sports, communicative English, personality development, and basic computer education.
Since its inception, the college has introduced two new courses, BSc Chemistry and BSc Computer Science, in its second year. By 2017, the college expanded further with MA English, MSc Mathematics, and M.Com. In 2020, MSc Computer Science and MSc Physics were also added to the curriculum.
